Tucked away in the heart of the Bavarian Alps, right on the border with Austria, lies the idyllic town of Berchtesgaden—a place that feels like it was pulled from a snow globe. In early March, we escaped for a long weekend here, and thanks to a lucky snowfall, it transformed into a pristine winter wonderland that felt nothing short of magical.
Our base for the three-night stay was the Kempinski Hotel Berchtesgaden, and I can confidently say it’s one of the best European resorts I’ve ever experienced. And no, they did not pay me to say this. Perched on a mountainside, the resort offers panoramic views of snow-draped peaks, tranquil forests, and postcard-worthy alpine scenery in every direction. From the moment we arrived, the experience was pure luxury. The spa facilities are outstanding—especially the heated outdoor pool, where you can soak in warm water while snowflakes drift down around you. There’s also a small ski slope right at the resort, perfect for casual skiing or simply enjoying the atmosphere. I took the opportunity to take a first skiing class at the training area and learned its probably not my sport. But it was fun anyways!
Whether you’re into winter sports or not, the resort offers plenty to do. We loved walking the surrounding trails, where silence and snowy stillness made for deeply relaxing strolls. Around the property, there are mindful corners with benches and fire pits, perfect for unwinding and soaking in the alpine beauty. Food lovers will be just as impressed. Breakfast was a feast—fresh breads, local cheeses, pastries, and everything in between. Dinner was just as memorable, especially when enjoyed by the fireplace, with the crackle of logs and soft glow adding to the cozy alpine charm.
A major perk of Berchtesgaden location is its proximity to Austria—Salzburg is just a short drive away, making for an easy and rewarding day trip. Wandering through Mozart’s hometown and then retreating to the snowy silence of the Alps felt like two vacations in one. In truth, there’s nothing I’d change about this escape. It was picture-perfect, peaceful, indulgent, and effortlessly beautiful. If I could, I’d return every year to relive this serene alpine dream.
Accommodation Tip: I do believe this resort is so perfect any room will be magical. Our choice was the Mountain View room perfect for two people with just the amount of tranquility needed to enjoy a peaceful retreat.
Excursion Tip: This is not a resort you need to or want to leave, however the proximity to Berchtesgaden town as well Salzburg makes it easy to step out via taxi or public transport for a few hours of city and shopping time.
