It's no secret that Strasbourg has been named “The Capital of Christmas” in the last years and that every holiday season, the city becomes packed with visitors looking for the best Christmas markets Europe has to offer. In the winter of 2022, I had to see it for myself and that was indeed the most magical holiday escape I ever experienced. It truly lived up to its name as the heart of Christmas. We spent three nights at the charming Hotel & Spa Le Bouclier d’Or, nestled in the historic Petite France district. With its old-world elegance and cozy atmosphere, it made the perfect base for our festive adventure. With the light snow fall in the early mornings it was even more magical than I have imagined! The Christmas markets in Strasbourg are unlike anything I’ve ever seen – massive and bursting with holiday spirit at every turn. From twinkling lights and handcrafted ornaments to the scent of mulled wine and spiced pastries, every street felt like stepping into a fairy tale. Wandering the cobbled streets and along the picturesque canals was pure romance. Too bad I was there with a friend and not a lover! If you’re looking to experience the magic of Christmas in its purest form, Strasbourg (and nearby Colmar) should be at the top of your list.

Accommodation Tip: During Christmas Market period, some streets are closed for cars therefore if you are coming via a rental car, do connect with the hotel beforehand with detailed instructions how to get to the hotel and where to park. We stayed at a lovely room however it was on one of the lower floors and view was limited. It is recommended to stay on a high floor to get the most out of the rooftop view of Strasbourg.

Excursion Tip: Another Christmas Capital around is the small town of Colmar, which can easily be reached by train from Strasbourg. If it’s even possible, Colmar was even more fairy tale-like. Decorated timber-framed houses, enchanting canals, and market stalls tucked into every corner – it was straight out of a storybook. I can strongly recommend a little hidden restaurant on one of the canals for lunch, Le Comptoir De Georges ,which was super yummy and cozy. With a cup of mulled wine in your hand, you really can not go wrong in this place.

Gastronomy Tip: If you are looking for a true French Cuisine experience, we had dinner at the Restaurant L’oignon in the heart of Petite France district in Strasburg and it did not disappoint! Make sure to book your reservation in advance. There are also a few good pubs around should you seek a drink after dinner.
