Not My Usual Getaway: Why Dubai Still Captivates

By 2025, I’ve had the chance to visit Dubai twice, and while its not the kind of mindful, quiet getaway I usually seek, it does offer a unique blend of experiences that make it undeniably worth the trip. From its striking futuristic architecture to the constant sense of luxury that cannot be missed – especially with the rather high cost of pretty much everything. Dubai really stands out as a destination where innovation meets indulgence and for me it was my curiosity to understand the culture and yes, feel rich although I am not. Its not a big city to cover and I would say that 3-4 days are enough unless you are planning to venture out to other cities such as Abu Dhabi which is only around 1.5 drive from Dubai. Abu Dhabi is the more traditional of the two and has less attractions but more of an authentic feel. It houses the iconic landmark the “Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque” which is a must if you are in the area. Dubai in contrast is quite modern and you have all the amenities a western traveler would appreciate in form of brand stores and chain restaurants. In my view having been in both cities I would recommend visiting both. You could stay in Dubai and take a day trip or get a more immersed feel of Abu Dhabi and stay in one of the recommended hotels.

In my first visit back in 2022 I have stayed at one of the top recommended areas for first timers to Dubai, the Palace Downtown directly in front of the famous Burj Khalifa. In such a strategic location you can not really go wrong. The hotel itself is a beautiful structure with historical architecture and amazing views overlooking the popular dancing fountains. It is also walking distance to the big Dubai mall and many of the best Dubai restaurants. We loved staying in the hotel although the rooms seemed a bit dated and old fashioned. On my second visit in 2025 I have decided to try out another strategic location which is the Dubai Marina. No one tells you that while popular and beautiful it Is quite a small spot that houses many hotels and the traffic going in and out of the Marina is horrible. If you plan on staying in the Marina area without too much back and forth – this could be the place for you. For accommodation I have chosen the Sofitel Dubai Jumeirah Beach.  The hotel is well placed right at the beach front with direct access to “The walk” the recreational promenade. I strongly recommend booking a direct sea view room on a high floor. You can either book directly on their site or via your platform of choice and the hotel does offer upgrades based on availability towards the stay. For sure this Sofitel is no different in style and character than other outstanding hotels under the French brand.

Accommodation Tip: I was lucky to have been given access to the club lounge in return to reviewing the hotel on Tripadvisor. As I truly enjoyed the hotel facilities, I had no problem giving my excellent review! Those who know me already would not be surprised that I love the option of using the club lounges mostly for the food and beverages that are offered throughout the day and limit your need to venture out and find other dining options. This lounge did not disappoint! I loved the afternoon tea, dinner and breakfast which were served in a smaller quiet atmosphere than the bigger hotel dining room.

Excursion Tips: Dubai is not without its attractions, and it really does differ based on your taste. I can only recommend my personal favorites which I would re-do should I had the opportunity to. The first is a visit to the famous luxurious 6-star Burj Al Arab hotel. While my “Inside Burj Al Arab” tour in 2022 was somewhat better than the one I took in 2025, it is still a fun experience unless you can afford to stay there. If you are like me and cannot, this tour allows you to take a peek into the royal suite and its luxurious interiors.  I strongly recommend booking a tour that includes a sunset cocktail at the end of the tour.

The second, a visit to the “View at the Palm” and best towards sunset. Beyond learning and witnessing the wonders of the palm architecture, the view from floor 52 or floor 54 (“the next level”) is phenomenal. Should you crave a more unique experience you can also book tickets in advance for the Aura Sky pool on floor 50. This is the world’s highest 360-degree infinity pool offering incredible views of the Dubai skyline and the Palm Jumeirah. Its not a cheap experience but if you ask me it was worth every penny! Inside tip: If you do not find available slots for the pool access you can book an entrance to the Aura sky lounge for a drink or meal and check as you arrive for cancellations to the pool access area .It worked for me!

Lastly, I would recommend a visit to the latest Dubai attraction, Dubai Future museum. The museum offers a glimpse into futuristic themes such as next level transportation and sustainability programs. The access to the museum is allowed by reserving time slots in advance which gives the freedom to roam the museum without a packed atmosphere and a more intimate setting. Some extras are nice but come with additional cost such as preparing your own perfume based on an AI survey to make the perfect fit between your character and the chosen scent.
